TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump has once again lauded Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, calling him a "friend." The U.S. head of state commended Prabowo's role in supporting the peace efforts in the Middle East.
Trump conveyed this during his address at the 47th ASEAN Summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia, on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
"My friend, President Prabowo of Indonesia, for [his] incredible support for peace efforts to secure a new day for the Middle East," said Trump, as quoted by Antara. "The Middle East will have peace after 3,000 years. A strong and everlasting peace."
Trump also reaffirmed the United States' commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with Southeast Asian. "We're delighted to forge richer partnerships on energy, technology, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and other industries. The United States is here for you. The United States is committed to a free, open, and thriving Indo-Pacific," said Trump.
The speech was delivered in the presence of heads of state of ASEAN member countries, including Prabowo, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and several others.
Prabowo expressed support for the United States' continued engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including in mediating the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. "This engagement has been very positive for ASEAN and the United States. We are very happy that the US has mediated the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia," said Prabowo.
Prabowo also mentioned that the outcomes of the ASEAN Summit this year are "very positive."
