Trump to Start Talks with China on TikTok Deals This Week

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump says he will begin talks with China about the TikTok deal this week. He mentioned that the U.S. has several deals for the sale of the famed short video application.

"I think we're gonna start Monday or Tuesday ... talking to China, perhaps President Xi or one of his representatives, but we would pretty much have a deal," Trump told reporters on Air Force One last Friday.

As quoted from CNA, the deal between the two countries became increasingly difficult to achieve after Trump announced high tariffs on Chinese goods. When asked how confident he is that China will agree to the deal, Trump said he has a good relationship with President Xi.

"I'm not confident, but I think so. President Xi and I have a great relationship, and I think it's good for them. I think the deal is good for China and it's good for us," he said.

As quoted from Antara, on June 21, 2025, Trump had extended the deadline for TikTok to separate itself from its parent company in China or face a ban in the U.S. three times.

However, this third extension is legally questionable because the PAFACA Act only allows for one extension of 90 days, which technically has been surpassed since the first and second postponements.

On Thursday, June 19, 2025, Trump signed an executive order extending the deadline by another 90 days, which will end in mid-September 2025.

"Working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure," said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

It is known that in 2024, the U.S. Congress passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), which requires TikTok to separate from ByteDance's ownership or face a ban on operating in the US.

The law provides until January 2025 to complete the divestiture process with a one-time option for a 90-day extension.
