UN Rights Chief Calls on States to Push for End to Iran War

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on countries to do everything they can to bring about an end to the US-Israeli war with Iran.

"This conflict has an unprecedented power ‌to ensnare countries across borders and around the world," he said at an emergency meeting of the Human Rights Council called by Gulf states.

He described the ongoing situation as extremely dangerous and unpredictable.

"The only guaranteed way to prevent this is to end ‌the conflict, and I urge all states, and particularly those with influence, to do everything in their power to achieve this," he said.

Meanwhile, Esmaeil Baqaei, the spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, again rejected the US claim of negotiations between the US and Iran in comments given to India Today.

"We have made it clear yesterday there are no talks or negotiations between Iran and the United States," the diplomat said.

"We've had a very catastrophic experience, I should say, of the United States diplomacy," he said, adding that Iran was attacked "two times within a span of nine months when we were in the middle of a negotiating process to resolve the nuclear issue."

Baqaei said Iran cannot "trust the United States diplomacy."

"Look at the facts. Iran is under constant bombardment and missiles by the US and Israel. So their claim of diplomacy and mediation is not credible. Because they have started this war and they are continuing to attack Iran."

Reports of US 15-Point Plan to End War

It was reported earlier that the Trump administration has reportedly conveyed to Iran a plan with 15 conditions for ending the war in the Middle East.

Israel's Channel 12 reported on the proposal late on Tuesday, citing three unnamed sources.

The New York Times, citing two officials, said the plan was conveyed to Iran via Pakistan, which has already offered to host any US-Iran talks.

US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have proposed a one-month ceasefire as part of the plan, both Channel 12 and the New York Times say.

During that period, the two sides would negotiate a 15-point agreement.

Channel 12 said ‌the plan would include the dismantling of Iran's nuclear program, ceasing support for proxy groups (such as the militant groups Hezbollah and Hamas) and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
