TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - UNESCO has launched an online course on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, now open for enrollment on Coursera. The course provides learners with free access to practical knowledge and tools for developing, deploying and governing artificial intelligence responsibly.

Developed by UNESCO in partnership with LG AI Research, the course is offered in English with translation options in 11 languages, including Bahasa Indonesia. Learners can complete the course at their own pace and are eligible to receive a certificate upon completion.

"Principles alone do not build ethical AI, people do. Through this course, UNESCO is taking the next step in its leadership on AI ethics, translating the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence into practical learning that empowers people to apply ethical principles throughout the AI lifecycle," said Prof. Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of UNESCO.

Designed for learners with a basic understanding of AI, the course provides a comprehensive foundation in AI ethics and demonstrates how ethical principles can be translated into decisions about AI products, services and policies.

Across ten modules, learners explore the foundations of AI ethics and examine key issues including fairness and inclusion, privacy and data governance, transparency and accountability, safety and security, environmental sustainability, proportionality, human autonomy, meaningful work and global AI governance. Each module combines conceptual frameworks with real-world examples, practical tools and reflective exercises that learners can apply directly within their own professional contexts.

By completing the course, learners will be able to explain the core principles and frameworks of responsible AI, assess the ethical risks and societal impacts associated with AI systems, and apply governance and human rights-based approaches to their development and use.

The curriculum is grounded in the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, adopted unanimously in 2021 by UNESCO’s 193 Member States, including Indonesia, as the first global normative instrument on AI ethics.

The Global MOOC on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence takes approximately ten hours to complete. All course materials, including videos, readings and assignments, are available free of charge. Its availability in Bahasa Indonesia provides learners across the country with greater access to knowledge that can support human-centred, inclusive and responsible approaches to AI.
