TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) is probing two witnesses in the alleged corruption case involving Chromebook procurement in 2019-2022 at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek).
The witnesses come from the Government Goods and Services Procurement Policy Agency, who was the Chair of the Office Equipment Electronics Working Group in 2020 with the initials DS, and the Project Manager at Surveyor Indonesia with the initials IR. "The witness questioning is carried out to support the evidence and complete the submission," said Head of the Legal Information Center of the Attorney General's Office, Harli Siregar, in his statement on Friday, June 20, 2025.
In this case, the prosecutors mentioned collusion or conspiracy that directed the procurement technical team to create a study in favor of procuring laptops with a Chromebook operating system. But there had been a trial purchase of 1,000 Chromebook units in 2018-2019 which declared that it's not suitable due to uneven internet network problems in Indonesia.
Therefore, the trial results recommended the procurement of laptops with Windows Operating System (OS) specifications. However, the recommendation was altered, and the ministry conducted a new study favoring the procurement of Chromebooks. The project cost Rp9.9 trillion, with Rp6.3 trillion coming from the Special Allocation Fund (DAK).
The prosecutors stated that this project was part of the digitalization of education program during former minister Nadiem Makarim's tenure. Although the Attorney General's Office has searched the homes of three staff members of the former education minister, prosecuters have yet to name any suspects in the case.
Nadiem is scheduled for questioning on Monday, June 23, 2025, as a witness to the case. The summons letter was delivered by AGO investigators on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Harli stated that the slated probing will delve into Nadiem's role as minister during the incident. "It is highly related to the supervisory functions carried out by the individual regarding the implementation of the Chromebook procurement," said Harli.
Therefore, AGO hopes that Nadiem will heed the summons and turn in for the questioning next week.
