TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim fully supports the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. He said Malaysia backs any initiative that helps to end the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Thousands of people crowded the heart of Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, to attend a Palestinian solidarity rally. As reported by Anadolu, the crowd carried banners and placards inscribed with slogans such as "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free."

The crowd consisted of students, civil servants, activists, and retirees. They flocked to the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, as reported by the state-run news agency Bernama. Many waved the three-colored Palestinian flag and wore traditional Palestinian keffiyeh scarves and headbands to show their support for the people of Gaza.

This rally, the latest in a series of similar protests, aimed to demonstrate the 'unwavering' unity and support of the Malaysian people for the Palestinian struggle. The crowd also showed support for 23 Malaysian citizens participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian mission to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza.

Speaking in front of the Malaysian people holding the rally, Anwar stated that Kuala Lumpur fully supports any initiative that aids the liberation of Palestine and efforts to break the blockade at the Rafah crossing. "We have already attempted (to break the blockade of Gaza) by sea, and now there is a proposal to (go through Rafah border), which deserves consideration," he said. The Rafah crossing is the entry point to the besieged Palestinian enclave of Gaza via Egypt.

Trump Announces Israel-Hamas Ceasefire

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of the peace agreement. "This means that all of the hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps towards a strong, durable and everlasting peace," Trump said through his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump stated that all parties will be treated fairly. "This is a GREAT Day for the Arab and Muslim World, Israel, all surrounding Nations, and the United States of America, and we thank the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, who worked with us to make this Historic and Unprecedented Event happen. BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!" Trump said, as reported by Al Jazeera, Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

A spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry, Majed al-Ansari, announced that the mediators had reached an agreement. He stated that in the implementation of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan, it would lead to the end of the war, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and the entry of aid.

Regarding the ceasefire, Hamas released its first public statement since it was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. In a post on Telegram, Hamas announced an agreement that entailed the end of the war in Gaza, the withdrawal of occupying forces, the entry of aid, and the exchange of prisoners.

Hamas called on U.S. leaders, Arab mediators, and international parties to force Israel to implement the agreement's terms. Hamas urged Israel not to delay what has been agreed.

Hamas stressed that it would remain faithful to its promises and would not ignore the national rights of the people of Gaza, including freedom, independence, and self-determination.

Following the announcement of the ceasefire by Trump, Netanyahu promised to return the hostages. "With God's help, we will bring them all home," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, referring to Israeli captives in Gaza.
