TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended the concerns with the United States about the safety of an Australian journalist who was shot with a rubber bullet while covering the protests in Los Angeles.
"It is not unreasonable to think that she could go about the coverage, clearly as people can see in the footage, clearly identified as media," Albanese told reporters at the National Press Club on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
"So we have already raised these issues with the US administration. We don't find it acceptable that it occurred," he added.
Albanese further stated that the recording, which shows a US police officer aiming his weapon at Tomasi before firing a projectile, clarifies that she has become a target despite identifying herself as media.
Lauren Tomasi, a reporter for Channel Nine, was shot with a rubber bullet while covering the chaotic protests in Los Angeles on Monday.
Albanese also said that he had spoken with Tomasi, who is "pretty resilient," and she is "going okay."
But Albanese said the footage was "horrific," referring to it as a recording of an Australian journalist doing what "journalists do at their very best, at their very best, which is to go into an environment that's not comfortable."
Nine, in a statement, said Tomasi and her camera operator are safe and will "continue their essential work covering these events."
