TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian migrant worker (PMI) from West Lombok, Sahri Ramdan, was found dead at the Tradwin palm oil plantation in Malaysia on Saturday. He was allegedly stabbed by another Indonesian worker at the Malaysian government-owned estate.
The 28-year-old's family was informed of his death by his supervisor. They were also shown photos of the victim, which revealed stab wounds to his right chest and upper thigh. At first, the incident was described as an accident caused by a buffalo.
"If he was gored by a buffalo, there would definitely be other wounds, but there were none at all on his body," said Jumanti, 54, the victim's father, when met at his home in Buwun Sejati Village, Narmada District, West Lombok, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Jumanti added that the family later learned Sahri had gone out with five fellow migrant workers from Lombok on the night of the incident. Three of them were from the same village as Sahri. "The five of his colleagues have been detained by the Malaysian Police, and their testimonies are inconsistent," said Jumanti.
The Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia has issued an official statement on Sahri’s death. According to the Death Registration Certificate, his cause of death was stated as "Penetrating Injury to the Chest," based on a medical report from Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang, Johor. An autopsy was performed to determine the exact cause of death.
Baiq Nelly Yuniarti, Acting Head of the NTB Manpower and Transmigration Office (Disnakertrans), confirmed Sahri Ramdan’s death. She stated that he had been deployed to Malaysia through PT Kijang.
Sahri’s body was initially scheduled to be repatriated on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, but the return was delayed to Wednesday, June 11. "According to the plan, the body will be escorted directly by the P3MI (Indonesian Migrant Worker Placement Company)," said Nelly.
Victim Had Planned to Marry
Jumanti never imagined he would lose his son so suddenly. The pain was even greater because Sahri had recently spoken to his mother at length on Eid al-Adha. "He called his mother for a long time on Eid," he said.
Asini, Sahri’s mother, said she was surprised by her son’s sudden death. During the call, Sahri had asked whether his uncle and cousins were visiting their house. When she asked why, he simply replied that he wanted the whole family to gather.
"He said he wanted to gather with the whole family," Asini explained.
Adding to her grief, Sahri had planned to return home to get married. "I had agreed for him to get married, there was already a potential bride," said Asini.
