TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged the public to heighten preparedness for potential heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Indonesia, citing several atmospheric dynamics influencing current weather conditions.

BMKG weather forecaster Ranika Dwi said in a statement quoted in Jakarta on Saturday that the affected areas include Aceh, Bangka Belitung Islands, West Java, and West Sulawesi.

In western Indonesia, thunderstorms are expected in Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Pangkal Pinang, and Bandung.

Moderate rain is forecast in Jakarta, while light rain is expected in Aceh, Medan, Padang, Jambi, Palembang, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, Serang, Semarang, and most parts of Kalimantan.

Meanwhile, thick cloud conditions are expected in Surabaya and Yogyakarta.

In eastern Indonesia, moderate rain may occur in Mamuju, Gorontalo, and Merauke. Light rain is forecast in Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Manado, Ternate, Ambon, and most parts of Papua.

Elsewhere, cloudy to overcast conditions are expected in Denpasar and Kendari, while haze conditions may occur in Palu.

In a separate statement, BMKG forecaster Sentia said that based on atmospheric dynamics such as the Australian monsoon, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), and the Equatorial Rossby wave, the public should remain alert to the potential for extreme weather and hydrometeorological disasters.

“This includes heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds. As weather conditions can change at any time, this should be taken into account when planning activities, especially land, sea, and air travel, as well as outdoor activities such as worship and tourism,” Sentia said.
