TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, known as BNPB, believes it has found all the deceased victims in the incident of the collapse of the musholla (small prayer room) at Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Buduran, Sidoarjo, East Java. However, some of the bodies they found are not intact.
BNPB estimates that there are 63 victims buried under the musholla debris. As of now, they have found 61 intact bodies and 7 body parts.
BNPB's Deputy for Emergency Response, Major General Budi Irawan, believes that the seven body parts belong to two individuals whose bodies have not been found. "We are certain that these two individuals are the owners of the seven body parts we found," Budi said in a virtual press conference on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
According to Budi, the collapsed area of the Islamic boarding school has been almost leveled with the ground. The majority of the debris has been cleared by the evacuation team from the area. Therefore, he considers it unlikely that there are any more bodies at the location. "Although this is still an estimation," he added.
However, Budi does not rule out the possibility of other bodies. A joint search and rescue (SAR) team will continue the evacuation process until it is completed.
The total number of victims in the incident of the musholla collapse at Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Buduran has reached 167 individuals. In addition to the 63 deceased victims, there are 104 people who survived and were injured.
The East Java Regional Police's Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team is still working to identify the seven body parts from the ruins of Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school. BNPB mentioned that there is still a possibility that the body parts could belong to more than two people, potentially increasing the estimated number of fatalities from the initial count of 63.
The Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Buduran, Sidoarjo, collapsed on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 3:00 PM local time. At that time, the male students were performing congregational Asr prayers on the ground floor while the building was 4 stories high. Debris clearance and victim evacuation are ongoing until a week later.
The parents of the students at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school are demanding legal enforcement regarding the collapse of the school buildings. The families of the victims are seeking accountability from the parties responsible for the incident.
One of the family representatives, Fauzi, mentioned that there is a suspected human error in this incident. Furthermore, officials and experts have stated that there were structural failures in the collapsed building. "This implies a violation and should be processed," Fauzi told Tempo on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Meanwhile, the East Java Regional Police declined to comment on the investigation of the school's building collapse. The police emphasized that they are still focused on assisting the victim evacuation process. "The (investigation) will come later; currently, we are focused on the humanitarian aspect," said the Chief of the Public Relations Division of the East Java Regional Police, Commissioner Jules Abraham Abast, on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
