BPS to Release Indonesia's Latest Poverty Data This Friday

6 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, stated that she will release Indonesia's poverty data on Friday, July 25, 2025. Previously, BPS postponed the announcement that was scheduled for July 15, 2025.

Although BPS has not yet released the data, President Prabowo Subianto mentioned the poverty figures during his speech at the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) Congress last Sunday in Solo. According to Prabowo, the absolute poverty rate has declined.

Amalia refused to comment on President Prabowo's claim. "We will release it, Insya Allah, on Friday after we ensure that the data we have calculated is accurate," said Amalia at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on July 22, 2025.

Through an official statement on its website, The BPS postponed the release of poverty and inequality data from July 15 to July 18. The BPS argued that the postponement was necessary to improve the quality of the data that would be presented to the public.

"This adjustment is made as a form of commitment for BPS to present accurate and reliable statistical data and information to all data users," BPS wrote in a statement that appeared when opening the bps.go.id site, accessed on Friday, July 18, 2025.

Several days after the postponement of the BPS release, President Prabowo claimed that the unemployment and absolute poverty rates had decreased. He admitted that he obtained the data from Amalia Adininggar, the Head of BPS. However, Prabowo did not mention the figures.

"The head of BPS reported to me that the unemployment rate has decreased and the absolute poverty rate has decreased as well. This is according to the BPS," said Prabowo at the PSI Congress in Solo, Central Java, on Sunday, July 20, 2025, as monitored on PSI's YouTube channel.

The House of Representatives (DPR) criticized BPS's decision to postpone the release of poverty figures. Deputy Chairperson of House Commission X Maria Yohana Esti Wijayati reminded that the timely release of data is important because BPS data is used as a reference. This member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) also stated that BPS data serves as a reference for the government in drafting the State Budget (APBN).

"We demand that BPS be able to present data openly," she said when a Hearing with the Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, on Thursday, July 18, 2025, monitored on YouTube DPR.

In the meeting at Commission X, Amalia stated that BPS data, which serves as a reference, is the reason her agency needs to ensure that the data provided is accurate. Amalia mentioned that the poverty data released by the World Bank in June was also the reason for the postponement of poverty data. According to her, BPS needs to ensure an improvement in the quality of the presented data.
