TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suffered from food poisoning and will work from home for the next three days, his office announced on Sunday. As reported by The Times of Israel, this development led to all planned hearings this week in the prime minister's corruption case being postponed, with the next hearing not taking place until September, due to the summer recess in the justice system.
After it was revealed that Netanyahu did not attend the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday morning, his office released a statement that he was unwell.
Netanyahu began to feel unwell overnight and was examined at his home by Dr. Alon Hershko, director of the internal medicine department at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem.
Hershko diagnosed the prime minister with inflammation of the intestines from consuming spoiled food.
Netanyahu's condition was declared to be good after further examination, his office said, adding that he received infusion fluids after dehydration due to the illness.
"In accordance with his doctors' instructions, the prime minister will rest at home for the next three days and will manage state affairs from there," the PM's office said.
Due to his illness, the Jerusalem District Court canceled Netanyahu's scheduled testimonies in his criminal trial on Monday and Tuesday, meaning he will not testify until at least September, as the court will enter the summer recess this week until September 5.
Netanyahu's lawyer, Amit Hadad, requested the trial be postponed, and the State Prosecutor's Office agreed but asked that Netanyahu testify on Wednesday and Thursday.
However, the court said they canceled the hearings instead of postponing them, as the hearings could not be held over the weekend due to scheduling conflicts.
During the recess, the court will operate at a reduced capacity.
Netanyahu's testimonies have been repeatedly postponed since they began in December last year due to the prime minister's health issues, the Gaza genocide, the war with Iran, as well as diplomatic trips abroad and Netanyahu's general duties as prime minister.
Netanyahu, 75, has faced health issues in recent years. His prostate was removed in late December, and he underwent hernia surgery in March 2024. In the same month, he took a few days off work after contracting the flu.
In 2023, he was fitted with a pacemaker after experiencing a temporary heart blockage. A week earlier, he was hospitalized for what he then said was dehydration.
A medical report released in January 2023, the last shared with the public, stated that Netanyahu was in a "completely normal state of health," his pacemaker was functioning well, and there were no signs of heart arrhythmia or other problematic conditions.
