TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Captain of the Indonesian national team, Jay Idzes, spoke about the reasons for the defeat against Saudi Arabia in the first match of Group B in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the Asian zone. According to him, the players lost focus, resulting in a 2-3 loss in the match held at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah early Thursday, October 9, 2025.
Indonesia briefly led through Kevin Diks' penalty in the 11th minute. However, after that, the team under Patrick Kluivert lost control of the game. "After 1-0, we conceded two quick goals. After that, the game became very difficult for us," Idzes said after the match.
Saudi Arabia turned the tables with goals from Waheb Saleh and two goals from Feras Albrikan. Diks' second penalty in the 88th minute only reduced the defeat. This defeat narrows Indonesia's chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Idzes believes that his team needs to review its game. "We just need to review the game," he said.
Although they still have one match left against Iraq, Idzes seemed cautious about discussing his team's chances. "We have one more chance. It's not over yet. We have to keep believing," he said without much expression.
The Sassuolo defender also expressed his appreciation to the Indonesian supporters who were present to provide direct support in Jeddah. "We have the best supporters in the world. Everyone in our team is very grateful for all the support from our fans."
"You can see, we lost 2-3 and they gave us a lot of appreciation. They showed us a lot of love. We want to repay their support; unfortunately, we couldn't do it today," said Idzes. With this defeat, the Indonesian national team occupies the bottom position in the temporary standings of Group B and must win against Iraq to maintain their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
