TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China strongly condemns the United States' attack on Iran, including its nuclear facilities, while Russia accused the U.S. of opening a "Pandora's box" with its military action.
The condemnation from China was conveyed by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as stated on their official website. "China strongly condemns the US attacks on Iran and bombing of nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)," the spokesperson said on Sunday, June 22.
According to the statement, the U.S. action seriously violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, and has worsened tensions in the Middle East. "China calls on the parties to the conflict, Israel in particular, to reach a ceasefire as soon as possible, ensure the safety of civilians, and start dialogue and negotiation," it added.
China also reiterated its readiness to work with the international community to unite efforts, uphold justice, and strive to restore peace and stability in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, China's Ambassador to the UN, Fu Cong, told the UN Security Council that they strongly condemn the U.S. attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
"We call for an immediate ceasefire," he said as reported by Al Jazeera, adding that, "China is deeply concerned about the risk of the situation getting out of control."
Fu Cong further called on all parties to the conflict—Israel in particular—to "cease fire as soon as possible to prevent the situation from escalating and to avoid any spillover of the fighting."
Russia's Response
In the same forum, Russia also considered the U.S. action as opening a "Pandora's box" by attacking Iran. Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, told the UN Security Council that the US, "once again, showed total disregard for the position of the international community" through its attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
Vasily Nebenzya said, as quoted by Al Jazeera, "The US is ready not only to turn a blind eye to the killings of tens of thousands of Palestinian women, children and the elderly, but also to put the security and well-being of all humanity at stake."
Through its actions in Iran, the US has opened a "Pandora's box" where "no one knows what catastrophe or suffering will follow."
