China Evacuates Over 82,000 People Following Fatal Floods; 5 Dead in Taiwan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese authorities have evacuated more than 82,000 people in Beijing due to the risk of heavy rainfall, according to government media reports cited by CNA. The evacuation follows the deaths of dozens in the outskirts of the capital last week.

State news agency Xinhua reported that tens of thousands of people had been moved from vulnerable areas as of 09:00 PM local time on Monday, based on information from the city's flood control headquarters.

Officials warned of potential flooding in several districts, including Miyun in the northwest, which was the worst-affected area in last week’s flooding. Other high-risk areas include Fangshan in the southwest, Mentougou in the west, and Huairou in the north.

The city's meteorological department issued a red alert, the highest level in the four-tier warning system, predicting heavy rainfall from Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning, August 5, 2025.

At least 44 people were killed and nine remain missing after last week's flooding in the northern outskirts of Beijing, according to official figures. Among the fatalities, 31 occurred at a nursing home in Miyun. A local official admitted there were shortcomings in the region’s disaster preparedness.

Residents in affected areas said they were caught off guard by the rapid surge of floodwaters that swept through homes and destroyed entire villages.

China frequently experiences natural disasters during the summer months, with some regions facing torrential rains while others endure extreme heat.

The country is currently the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change and the growing frequency and severity of extreme weather events. However, China is also a major player in the global renewable energy sector and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Heavy Rain in Taiwan Kills 5, Leaves 3 Missing

Heavy rainfall also affected neighboring Taiwan, according to Focus Taiwan. At least five people were confirmed dead, three remain missing, and 78 were injured after rainstorms struck the island beginning July 28, the Central Emergency Operation Center (CEOC) reported on Monday.

The latest fatality was reported in Chiayi County, where police discovered the body of a woman believed to have fallen into a small river near her home in Alishan Township on Sunday. Her body was found among rocks downstream after search operations resumed Monday morning, having been paused overnight due to high water levels.

This marks the fifth death related to the ongoing heavy rains. Previous fatalities included a woman whose body was recovered off the coast of Kaohsiung on Sunday, and a 57-year-old man who drowned on July 31 after driving into a flooded road in Nantou County.

The first two victims were members of a five-person family whose vehicle plunged into a gorge along Provincial Highway No. 20 in Kaohsiung on July 30 during poor weather conditions. Two bodies have been found, while three family members remain missing as of 05:40 PM on Monday.

In addition to the fatalities, 78 people across Taiwan have sustained injuries due to the severe weather. Three individuals were reported trapped in floodwaters and awaiting rescue.

The Central Weather Bureau recorded rainfall totals between July 28 and 04:00 PM on Monday of 2,922 millimeters in Maolin District, Kaohsiung, and 2,364 millimeters in Wutai Township, Pingtung County.
