Death Toll Rises to 60 in East Java School Collapse

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The fatality count from the collapse of the prayer building at the Al Khoziny Buduran Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, continues to climb. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recovered 11 bodies during the search for victims in the rubble on Monday, October 6, 2025.

The discovery of the 11 bodies has brought the incident’s death toll to 60. "On Monday, from 00:00 to 18:15 WIB (local time), the search and rescue team found 11 bodies under the debris of the Al Khoziny musala," said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, in a written statement on Monday, October 6, 2025.

Abdul confirmed that the joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team is still searching for victims, as three people remain missing. "This number is a temporary estimate based on the attendance list issued by the boarding school," he added.

In addition to the bodies, the joint SAR team also evacuated five body parts. The East Java Regional Police's Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team is currently working to identify these remains at the Bhayangkara Surabaya Hospital.

The combined SAR team is continuing its search efforts in the debris of the building. The area is still covered in piles of concrete from the collapsed structure, which has also affected nearby old buildings. "The debris clearing process is being done carefully to avoid causing damage to the adjacent buildings," Abdul noted.

The Al Khoziny Buduran Islamic boarding school's prayer building collapsed at 15:00 WIB on Monday, September 29, 2025. At the time, male students were performing congregational Asr prayers on the ground floor of the four-story building.

In this incident, 113 people were injured. Six of the injured are still being treated in the hospital, while 96 people have been discharged, and one person did not require further treatment.

The East Java Regional Police will investigate allegations of human negligence in the incident after the victim evacuation is complete. "The initial indications of the collapse's cause will be explained by experts to ensure scientific validity. Please be patient as we complete the evacuation of the victims," said the Chief of the East Java Regional Police, Inspector General Nanang Avianto, in a written statement on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

According to Nanang, only experts can draw conclusions regarding the alleged construction negligence, and his institution is currently investigating the matter. The police have also summoned several witnesses, most of whom are students of the Islamic boarding school.
