TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The streets of Gaza are now filled with people wandering seemingly aimlessly. But their purpose is clear: to find a piece of bread and a glass of water. Many humanitarian aid centers that once provided food have shut down due to Israel’s blockade.
Among those searching is Umm Mohammed. Every morning, the mother of five leaves her refugee tent with her eldest daughter to walk to a public kitchen in Gaza City. That kitchen is their only hope of receiving a single gallon of drinking water. That is, as long as the kitchen still has enough.
Most of the family’s food reserves are gone, Umm Mohammed told Tempo on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. “Now we survive on one meal a day from the public kitchen. Sometimes it’s just a little rice and a few pieces of bread. It’s not enough to ease our hunger,” said the 40-year-old woman.
By October 7, 2025, the Gaza War will have entered its second year. Over that time, Israel has cut off water pipelines and destroyed treatment facilities. Groundwater has been contaminated, making it undrinkable.
