TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump will make a decision within two weeks on whether to strike Iran. This was conveyed by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to reporters during a press conference on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
During the event, Leavitt read out Trump's statement. "Based on the fact that there’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks," said Trump's statement, as quoted by Time.
The deadline set by the president emerged as Iran and Israel traded airstrikes, and the U.S. stance is being observed by all parties involved, as it will drastically change the conflict map.
Last Wednesday, when asked if the U.S. would soon attack Iran's nuclear facilities, Trump told reporters, "I may do it, I may not do it, nobody knows what I'm going to do… I can tell you this. Iran’s got a lot of trouble."
Leavitt stated that Trump continues to monitor the situation and being briefed by his National Security Council and remains "in constant communication" with the Israeli government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "The U.S. government asserts the fact that Iran has never been closer to obtaining a nuclear weapon," she said.
The escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran began last Friday, June 13. Israel launched what it termed a "preemptive strike," targeting more than a dozen locations in Iran. Iran then launched retaliatory attacks on Tel Aviv.
The Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA) stated that Israel's missile attacks on Iran have killed 639 people and injured another 1,329. The organization said that 263 of those killed were civilians and 154 were military personnel. In Israel, so far 24 people have been killed due to Iran's attacks, with 838 injured.
On Thursday, Israel's attacks targeted the Arak nuclear facility. Iran retaliated, damaging four buildings in Tel Aviv, including a hospital. Israel claimed the attack injured 271 people.
Trump pledged of no new wars during his campaign, and he is now facing a two-week deadline. The deadline opens up the opportunity for negotiations but does not rule out the possibility of U.S. involvement. "The president has made it clear he always wants to pursue diplomacy," said Leavitt. "But believe me, the president is unafraid to use strength if necessary."
