TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Egyptian national team has secured their place in the final round of the 2026 World Cup. They have become the third African representative to advance, following Morocco and Tunisia.
Egypt secured their qualification with a 3-0 victory over Djibouti in the early hours of Thursday, October 9, 2025 (WIB). Mohamed Salah was the star of the victory, scoring two goals (brace). The other goal for Egypt was scored by Ibrahim Adel.
Egypt leads Group A with 23 points from nine matches. With one match remaining, they are already five points ahead of Burkina Faso in second place.
The qualification for the 2026 World Cup is divided into nine groups. The winner of each group will advance to the final round. Meanwhile, the four best second-placed teams will compete for an intercontinental playoff spot.
Prior to this, Morocco and Tunisia had already secured their places. Morocco emerged as the winner of Group E, while Tunisia qualified from Group H.
Africa is allotted nine direct spots in the final round. Some other teams with strong chances of qualifying include Algeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Senegal.
One of the teams with the potential to cause an upset and qualify for the World Cup is Cape Verde. With one match remaining, they are at the top of Group D with 20 points, two points ahead of Cameroon.
Cape Verde recently drew 2-2 with Libya. They will qualify if they win their final match against Eswatini next Monday. The chances are high as they will be playing at home.
