French PM Sebastien Lecornu Resigns Amid Backlash Over New Cabinet

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, October 6, 2025, amid increasing criticism of his new cabinet lineup.

President Macron accepted Lecornu's resignation, as reported by BFM TV, citing the Elysee Palace as quoted by Anadolu.

This move came just hours after Lecornu announced the new cabinet, which was largely made up of members from the government that collapsed on September 8.

The cabinet lineup immediately drew criticism from the opposition parties.

"The choice to keep this government unchanged, seasoned with the man who bankrupted France, is pathetic," said the far-right extremist leader of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, through X social media.

The Green Party leader Marine Tondelier regarded the "disrespect for democracy" among Macron's supporters as having "reached a new level," while criticizing the return of Bruno Le Maire to the cabinet.

Meanwhile, Socialist Party Chairman Boris Vallaud stated that Macronists' "obstination plunges the country a little deeper into chaos every day."

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced that he will hold a strategic meeting of the Republican Party on Monday to discuss the latest political developments.

"The composition of the Government does not reflect the promised break," he wrote in X.

In Lecornu's new cabinet, Roland Lescure replaced Eric Lombard as the Minister of Finance. Bruno Le Maire, the former finance minister, now serves as the defense minister.

The cabinet includes the following ministers: Eric Woerth, Minister of Regional Organization and Decentralization; Naima Moutchou, Minister of Public Transformation and Digital Technology; Mathieu Lefevre, Minister of Relations with Parliament; and Marina Ferrari, Minister of Sports, Youth, and Community Life.

Several ministers kept their positions, including Retailleau, Jean-Noel Barrot, Elisabeth Borne, Manuel Valls, Gerald Darmanin, Catherine Vautrin, Rachida Dati, Agnes Pannier-Runacher, Annie Genevard, Amelie de Montchalin, Philippe Tabarot, and Aurore Berge.

Lecornu was appointed as prime minister after Francois Bayrou lost a vote of confidence in the National Assembly on September 8.

Bayrou had previously proposed a budget framework for 2026 that targeted 44 billion euros in savings in order to curb France's public debt, which had reached 115 percent of its GDP.

With a budget deficit of 5.8 percent of GDP, one of the highest in the European Union, budget debates became a major source of political tension in France. Failure to agree on the 2025 budget also led to the downfall of the Michel Barnier government last December.
