TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 53,901 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's genocide since October 2023, the Gaza Health Ministry said on Saturday.
A ministry statement said 79 bodies were brought to hospitals in the past 24 hours, while 211 people were injured, bringing the number of injured to 122,593 in the Israeli onslaught.
"Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads because rescue teams cannot reach them."
Among the dead were nine of the 10 children of Dr. Alaa Al-Najjar, who worked at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. Her husband, Dr. Hamdi Al-Najjar, was seriously injured.
The doctor couple's only surviving child, an 11-year-old boy, was seriously injured and underwent emergency surgery on Friday.
Harrowing footage shared by the Palestinian Civil Defense, and verified by media outlets including the BBC, showed the bodies of young children being pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building near a petrol station in Khan Younis.
British surgeon Dr. Graeme Groom, who volunteers at Nasser Hospital, said Dr. Al-Najjar’s surviving son was his last patient of the day.
“He was badly injured and looked much younger when we lifted him onto the operating table,” he said in a video posted on social media.
The United Nations has warned that Gaza may be entering its “most violent phase” of the war, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres slamming Israeli aid restrictions as worsening the humanitarian disaster.
Although Israel partially lifted its blockade this week, allowing only a limited supply of aid, the UN said the deliveries were far short of the 500–600 truckloads of supplies needed daily to meet the basic needs of the territory’s 2.1 million people.
The Israeli army resumed its offensive on the Gaza Strip on March 18 and has since killed 3,747 people and wounded nearly 10,600, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that came into effect in January.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its war in the enclave.
