TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hamas delegation arrived in Egypt on Sunday, October 5, 2025, to engage in talks with Israel to finalize the ceasefire agreement, hostage release, and cessation of war in Gaza that has been ongoing for two years.

According to Euronews, the Hamas delegation is led by the group's exiled leader, Khalil Al-Hayya. They will join representatives from the United States and Qatar in the latest diplomatic effort to stop the war in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, according to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli delegation led by Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer is scheduled to depart for Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday, October 6. Netanyahu previously hinted that the hostage release agreement could be announced this week, raising hopes for the possibility of a ceasefire.

An Egyptian official said that the Hamas delegation has arrived in Egypt. He mentioned that the meeting would discuss the exchange of all hostages still held in Gaza for thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. The official added that U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff would also join the talks.

As reported by the Indian Express, the talks in Egypt are part of a peace plan outlined by U.S. President Donald Trump. The plan includes the release of hostages and the transfer of the Gaza administration to the Palestinian authorities. Hamas is reported to have agreed to some of the conditions set by Washington, but still wants to negotiate about other terms.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, "There have been very positive discussions with Hamas, and Countries from all over the World this weekend, to release the Hostages, end the War in Gaza but, more importantly, finally have long sought PEACE in the Middle East." Trump added that he was informed that the first phase should be completed this week.

This Tuesday marks two years since the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and held about 250 people hostage. The attack triggered a large-scale Israeli military operation that continues to this day.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that over 67,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began. The figure does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. However, according to UN data, more than two-thirds of the verified casualties are women and children.

Hamas is still holding approximately 48 hostages in Gaza, and about 20 of them are believed to be alive. Last Friday, according to the U.S. peace plan, Hamas stated that they are ready to release all hostages immediately, but emphasized that some other conditions still require further consultation.
