TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Mardani Ali Sera, stated that France and Saudi Arabia have a momentum to resolve the conflict between Palestine and Israel.
Mardani said that the high-level conference on the two-state solution initiated by France and Saudi Arabia emerged after Israel was pressured by many countries.
"The France and Saudi initiation summit has a momentum," said Mardani to Tempo, Friday, May 30, 2025.
The legislator from the Prosperous Justice Party Faction reminded that Israel must also be investigated for genocide against Palestine if Indonesia later establishes diplomatic relations with Israel. "All violations of international norms must be investigated," said Mardani to Tempo, Friday, May 30, 2025.
Mardani revealed that the investigation into genocide could look at precedents in the former Yugoslavia. At that time, former Serbian President Slobodan Miloevic was tried as a war criminal. Mardani also emphasized that not only Israel must be punished, but also those who help the Palestinian genocide.
The United Nations has scheduled a high-level conference on the two-state solution to be held on June 17-20, 2025 in New York.
As quoted from the official United Nations website, this conference is chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. Both of them emphasize the need for the June conference to affirm concrete peace between Palestine and Israel.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia would establish diplomatic relations if Israel recognizes the independence of Palestine.
The statement was made by Prabowo in a joint statement with French President Macron at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Prabowo stated that the only independence for Palestine is through a two-state solution.
"Once the state of Palestine is recognized by Israel, Indonesia is ready to recognize Israel and we are ready to establish diplomatic relations with Israel," said Prabowo.
