Indonesia and Russia Forge Partnership on 5G and Cybersecurity

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is collaborating with the Russian government to establish a special subcommittee that will spearhead digital programs in the country. This collaboration enables the exchange of technology and human resources, as well as the strengthening of cybersecurity.

Communication Minister Meutya Viada Hafid said the collaboration was formed with the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media of the Russian Federation, at the Konstantinovsky Palace, St. Petersburg. President Prabowo Subianto and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin are said to have directly witnessed the start of the implementation of this strategic digital collaboration.

According to Meutya, this collaboration also includes developing 5G network, Internet of Things (IoT), radio frequency spectrum management, and forming inclusive internet policies. "The collaboration also involves digital content production, bilateral seminars, and exchange of research between institutions," Meutya said in a written statement on Friday, June 20, 2025.

Meutya stated that Russia has a strong track record in providing fast and affordable internet services to 92 percent of its population. Furthermore, home broadband tariffs in Russia range from Rp95,000 to Rp160,000 monthly. Meutya considers this an important reference achievement for Indonesia.

The Golkar Party politician revealed that the memorandum of understanding with the Russian government is valid for five years and can be automatically extended. She is confident that this collaboration will lay the groundwork for Indonesia's long-term, inclusive, secure, and sustainable digital transformation. "Indonesia's digital diplomacy is now making tangible progress. We want concrete results that strengthen Indonesia's position as an active player in the global digital landscape," said Meutya.
