TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) announced that it has concluded the rescue operation at the collapsed school building in Sidoarjo, East Java. Dozens of students at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school were found dead after being trapped in the collapsed prayer room on September 29, 2025.
The First Admiral Yudhi Bramantyo, the Director of Search and Rescue Operations of Basarnas, said rescuers have concluded the operations after nine days. "From the SAR perspective, it may be completed today," Yudhi said in a virtual press conference on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
At present, Yudhi mentioned that the majority of the Al Khoziny prayer room ruins have been leveled with the ground. Most of the debris from the collapsed four-story building has now been cleared.
Yudhi said rescuers would conduct a final sweep before closing the search and rescue operation at the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School. "We hope that none are left," he said.
According to Yudhi, Basarnas would hand over the complete handling to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) after the SAR operation officially ends. Afterwards, BNPB will continue with the rehabilitation and reconstruction process post-incident.
The total number of victims in the incident of the prayer room collapse at Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Buduran has reached 167 individuals. In addition to the 63 deceased victims, there are 104 people who survived and were injured.
The East Java Regional Police's Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team is still working to identify the seven body parts from the ruins of Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school. BNPB mentioned that there is still a possibility that the body parts could belong to more than two people, potentially increasing the estimated number of fatalities from the initial count of 63.
The Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Buduran, Sidoarjo, collapsed on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 3:00 PM local time. At that time, the male students were performing congregational Asr prayers on the ground floor while the building was 4 stories high. Debris clearance and victim evacuation are ongoing until a week later.
The parents of the students at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school are demanding legal enforcement regarding the collapse of the school buildings. The families of the victims are seeking accountability from the parties responsible for the incident.
One of the family representatives, Fauzi, mentioned that there is a suspected human error in this incident. Furthermore, officials and experts have stated that there were structural failures in the collapsed building. "This implies a violation and should be processed," Fauzi told Tempo on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Meanwhile, the East Java Regional Police declined to comment on the investigation of the school's building collapse. The police emphasized that they are still focused on assisting the victim evacuation process. "The (investigation) will come later; currently, we are focused on the humanitarian aspect," said the Chief of the Public Relations Division of the East Java Regional Police, Commissioner Jules Abraham Abast, on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
