TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is facing tough competition from Qatar and India in the bid to host the 2036 Olympics. Both countries have claimed their commitment to building sports infrastructure and engaging in diplomatic approaches to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Despite IOC having not opened the official bidding process for the 2036 Olympics, India and Qatar have both garnered full backing from governments, sports associations, and public figures to strengthen their bid positions. According to the Qatar News Agency (QNA) report, Qatar officially announced its bid at the end of last July with an inclusivity and global peace campaign.
Qatar claims that 95 percent of the sporting facilities are available, including stadiums and arenas previously used in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2006 Asian Games, and the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.
Qatar's bid is led by Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani and Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, who are actively communicating with international federations. Qatar has stated that the Olympics will be in line with their national development program, the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Meanwhile, India has chosen the city of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat as the center for their hosting plans. The Indian government is preparing the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will be their main project for the bid.
In a letter of intent sent to the IOC, India emphasized its commitment to peace, international cooperation, and the spirit of mutual progress. India's bid is also part of the larger vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which coincides with India's 100 years of independence. However, India still faces several issues from the IOC, including sports organization governance, high doping cases, and limited international achievements.
In addition to India and Qatar, several countries such as Germany, Turkey, Hungary, and Indonesia, have expressed interest in hosting the international sports events. Since July 2021, Indonesia has expressed interest in hosting the world's largest sporting event in 2036 after failing to secure the 2032 Olympics, which eventually went to Brisbane, Australia.
Various efforts have been made by Indonesia through the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI/NOC Indonesia). Most recently, Indonesia participated in the bidding process to host the 2030 Youth Olympics, seen as a strategic step ahead of the 2036 Olympics. The final decision on the host for the 2036 Olympics has not been made, and the IOC is still in the internal review stage.
