TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The bilateral meeting between Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and his Dutch counterpart David van Weel took place at the Pancasila Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
In the meeting, both ministers inked the Plan of Action (PoA) 2026-2029 and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on National Initiatives for Sustainable and Climate-Smart Oil Palm Smallholders (NISCOPS). These documents serve as a roadmap for cooperation in economic, political, and socio-cultural fields.
Renewable Energy and Climate Resilience
David van Weel emphasized renewable energy, climate resilience, and natural resource management as the main priorities for future Indonesia-Netherlands relations.
He said the Netherlands sees Indonesia as a strategic partner in strengthening the global energy transition.
The Dutch minister underscored the Netherlands' commitment to supporting investments and technology exchange for the development of renewable energy, including in the offshore wind, green hydrogen, and sustainable water management sectors.
The ministers also discussed opportunities for synergy between Dutch companies and research institutions with the public and private sectors in Indonesia.
Water Management and Climate Adaptation
In addition to energy cooperation, Indonesia and the Netherlands agreed to strengthen collaboration in disaster risk management and adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
The Netherlands offered its expertise in water governance and flood defense systems. The Dutch minister said the government wants to assist Indonesia in facing environmental challenges by sharing knowledge on "flood management, urban resilience, and water management."
David van Weel also emphasized that support for Indonesia's green transition is a comprehensive partnership that balances economic, social, and environmental aspects.
"Indonesia and the Netherlands share the same goal of creating a sustainable future for the next generations," he added.
A Future-Oriented Partnership
Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that the two countries are building a partnership that is not only rooted in shared history but also future-oriented. "We have reached another pivotal milestone with the launch of the Plan of Action 2026-2029, which offers a concrete roadmap to deepen our comprehensive partnership," he said.
Sugiono also welcomed the return of the Java Man fossil by the Dutch Government. "The repatriation of the Java Man fossils from the Dubois collection symbolizes shared history, reconciliation, and mutual trust," he expressed.
According to Sugiono, this bilateral meeting reaffirms the commitment of both countries to deepen strategic dialogues in facing global issues such as food crisis, climate change, and digital transformation. "We are united in shaping our common goal of a prosperous, sustainable, and forward-looking future," he concluded.
