Indonesia Ready to Evacuate 380 Indonesian Citizens in Iran due to Israeli Attack

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono has set the status of the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, Iran, to be at alert level one due to the increasing intensity of Israel's attacks on Iran in the past two days.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has implemented contingency measures and evacuation for Indonesian citizens. Sugiono stated that there are currently about 380 Indonesian citizens in Iran, particularly in Tehran.

Sugiono mentioned that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also been in communication with neighboring countries of Iran to facilitate cross-border access in case the evacuation process of Indonesian citizens needs to be carried out in the near future.

According to Sugiono, the evacuation of Indonesian citizens in Iran can only be done by land. "Aircraft cannot go there. The only way is by land," said the Vice Chairperson of the Gerindra Party as quoted by Antara.

Israel has launched large-scale attacks on Iran since June 13, 2025. The Israeli military targeted nuclear facilities in several cities in Iran and high military command centers.

Iranian media reported that as of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the death toll due to Israeli air strikes in Tehran and other areas had reached 585 people. Meanwhile, 1,326 others were injured as a result of the attacks.

In response to Israel's attacks, Iran launched ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv, resulting in 24 deaths and 500 others injured.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video released by his office on Wednesday, June 19, 2025, stated that Israel is "advancing step by step" towards eliminating the threat posed by Iran's nuclear sites and ballistic missile weaponry.

"We are attacking nuclear sites, missiles, headquarters, regime symbols," said Netanyahu. Israel, which is not a party to the International Non-Proliferation Treaty, is believed to be the only country in the Middle East that possesses nuclear weapons. Israel neither confirms nor denies this.

Iran denies building nuclear weapons and states that its program is solely for peaceful purposes. Although the International Atomic Energy Agency stated last week that Tehran violated its non-proliferation obligations for the first time in 20 years.

The worst conflict ever between the two hostile nations has raised concerns of dragging world powers into war. The Israel-Iran war has also shaken regional stability that has already been disrupted by the aftermath of the Gaza war.
