TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office has detained former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim after he was discharged from the hospital yesterday.
"It is true that the person (Nadiem) has been discharged from the hospital and detained again at the Salemba Detention Center, branch of the South Jakarta District Attorney's Office," said the Head of the Legal Information Center of the Attorney General's Office, Anang Supriatna, when contacted on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
The Attorney General's Office suspended Nadiem's detention because he had to undergo hemorrhoid surgery at a government hospital. During his treatment, six attorney's office officers were on guard at the location.
During the pretrial hearing at the South Jakarta District Court on Monday, October 6, 2025, Nadiem's wife, Franka Franklin, said her husband was preparing for a second operation. "My prayer is that Mas Nadiem will quickly recover and be able to undergo the second surgical operation, and can go through this legal process as well as possible and as strong as possible," said Franka.
Nadiem's parents, Nono Anwar Makarim and Atika Algadri, also mentioned that their son's condition has improved. "Still in the recovery process," said Nono. Atika added, "He's a bit sick, but the doctors are taking care of him."
With the end of the treatment period, Nadiem returned to the Salemba Detention Center, branch of the South Jakarta District Attorney's Office to undergo further legal proceedings. Nadiem was named as the fifth suspect in the alleged corruption of Chromebook procurement since September 4, 2025. He was charged with violating Article 2 Paragraph (1) and Article 3 of the Corruption Law. He was immediately detained at the Salemba Detention Center, Central Jakarta after the determination.
The Attorney General's Office also named four people as suspects. They are former Special Staff of Nadiem, Jurist Tan; former consultant of the Ministry of Education and Culture and Research and Technology, Ibrahim Arief; Director of Elementary Schools of the Ministry of Education and Culture and Research and Technology for the 2020-2021 period, Sri Wahyuningsih; and Director of Junior High School of the Ministry of Education and Culture and Research and Technology for the 2020-2021 period, Mulyatsyah. They were named suspects on July 15, 2025. On that day, Nadiem was also questioned for nine hours, but was allowed to go home.
In their statement, the Attorney General's Office suspected that Nadiem gave instructions to the four suspects in a Zoom Meet meeting on May 6, 2020 to procure ChromeOS-based laptops from Google. Meanwhile, a study stating that Chromebook was superior to other products, namely Windows, was only published in June 2020.
Nadiem Makarim, from the start, denied allegations that he benefited from the Chromebook laptop project. He claimed that the use of Chromebook laptops actually saved millions of rupiah. "The procurement process for these laptops already used the least conflict of interest process," he said.
