TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After more than a decade, Indonesia is sending its Foreign Minister to Pyongyang once again. On October 10 to 11, 2025, Foreign Minister Sugiono is scheduled for a working visit to North Korea, marking a historic first after Marty Natalegawa's trip to the state in 2013.

Yvonne Mewengkang, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the working visit comes upon official invitation from the North Korean Foreign Minister, Choe Son-hui.

"This meeting will discuss various efforts to strengthen bilateral, regional, and global cooperation," said Yvonne when met at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs complex in Central Jakarta on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

Maintaining Constructive Dialogues in East Asia

According to Yvonne, Foreign Minister Sugiono's visit demonstrates Indonesia's commitment to maintaining constructive dialogues with all East Asian partners, including North Korea. "This visit also serves as an important momentum for Indonesia to strengthen its diplomatic presence in North Korea," she said.

In addition to attending a bilateral meeting with Choe Son-hui on October 11 in Pyongyang, Sugiono is scheduled to inspect the Indonesian Embassy in Pyongyang. The diplomatic mission was reactivated in July 2025 after being closed for four years in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indonesian Diplomatic Presence in Pyongyang

The Indonesian Embassy in Pyongyang was closed on July 23, 2021, in response to the strict lockdown policy imposed by North Korea during the pandemic. Since late 2020, Pyongyang has also directed foreign diplomats to relocate from its territory.

Re-establishment of Indonesia's diplomatic representation in North Korea signifies the recovery of relations between the two countries after a period of suspension. According to the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomatic relations between Indonesia and North Korea have been established since the administration of Indonesia's first President, Soekarno, and Kim Il Sung.

Previously, on September 18, 2024, Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Pahala Mansury also received the honorable visit of North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Park Sang Gil in Jakarta. During the meeting, both parties affirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in various sectors and to support peace and stability in the region through dialogue and collaboration with ASEAN.
