4 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cannes Film Festival 2025, commencing tomorrow, will once again be a prominent showcase for global filmmakers, and this year Indonesia has a special reason to celebrate.

For the first time, Indonesian film producer Yulia Evina Bhara has been appointed as one of the jury members for Semaine de la Critique or Critics' Week, a distinguished segment of this prestigious festival dedicated to discovering emerging talents in international cinema.

Critics' Week holds an important place at Cannes, having previously been a launching pad for many prominent figures in the film industry.

Prestigious Jury Line-Up

Yulia is one of five jurors chosen to evaluate the selected films in the 64th edition of Critics' Week. She will be joining influential individuals in the film world, including Rodrigo Sorogoyen, a Spanish director and producer who is the president of this year's jury.

Other jury members include Jihane Bougrine, a Moroccan film critic and journalist associated with Le Desk and Vogue Arabia, and a member of the selection committee for the Marrakech International Film Festival.

Also on the jury is Josee Deshaies, a French-Canadian cinematographer whose work has garnered nominations for the César and Lumières Awards. Adding further prestige is Daniel Kaluuya, a British actor and Oscar winner renowned for his roles in films such as Get Out, Nope, and Judas and the Black Messiah.

These jurors will determine the recipients of several prestigious awards, including the AMI Paris Award for Best Feature Film, the French Touch Jury Award, the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award, and the Leitz Cine Discovery Prize for Best Short Film.

Profile of Yulia Evina Bhara

Yulia Evina Bhara began her career in theater, where she independently produced shows with historical and humanitarian themes for seven years. She later established the production house KawanKawan Media and began producing films in 2012 through the Partisipasi Indonesia Foundation.

According to the Torino Film Lab website, her debut short film, On the Origin of Fear (2016), achieved successful screenings at the Venice International Film Festival and competed in Toronto and Clermont-Ferrand. The film also received a Special Mention at the Singapore International Film Festival, marking Yulia's initial international recognition in the film industry.

Yulia's name gained widespread recognition with her first feature film, Solo, Solitude (Istirahatlah Kata-kata, 2016), directed by Yosep Anggi Noen. The film was screened at the Locarno Film Festival and introduced the international audience to the story of activist Wiji Thukul.

As noted by the Indonesian Film Center, her other notable works include The Science of Fictions (Hiruk-Pikuk Si Al-Kisah, 2019), You and I (2020), and Autobiography (2023), all of which successfully participated in various international festivals, further solidifying her position as a leading producer in Indonesia.

Renoir

In addition to her jury duties, Yulia is also involved as a co-producer of the film Renoir, one of the 21 films selected for the main competition at Cannes 2025. The film is directed by Chie Hayakawa from Japan and represents a collaborative production involving Japan, France, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

"It's truly delightful news that Renoir has been included in the main competition at Cannes. Hopefully, after Cannes, this film will also be enjoyed by audiences in Indonesia," Yulia expressed.

Her involvement highlights Indonesia's active participation in global cinema, not only as a participant but also as a contributor to international film trends. With her extensive experience, Yulia Evina Bhara's presence at Cannes 2025 signifies the increasing recognition of Indonesian cinema on the international stage.
