TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Reports of violence against women and children in Indonesia have shown a sharp increase in the past two weeks, according to data received by the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection.
Minister Arifatul Choiri Fauzi revealed that from January 1 to June 2025, the ministry recorded 11,800 cases. As of July 7, 2025, that number had risen to 13,000.
"This means that in just over two weeks, the reported number of cases has exceeded 2,000," said Arifatul during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture in Central Jakarta on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
She explained that most of the cases involved sexual violence, with women being the primary victims. These incidents have largely taken place within domestic settings.
Arifatul pointed to several contributing factors, including parenting methods and the irresponsible use of digital devices.
"Because from several cases of violence experienced or committed against children, almost all of the causes or sources are influenced by social media or gadgets," she said.
She also cited family-related issues as another significant cause. To address the growing number of cases, Arifatul emphasized the importance of collaboration between ministries, institutions, and members of the public.
In response, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno announced that the government plans to expand Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 5 of 2014, which currently focuses on combating sexual violence against children.
Pratikno stated that his ministry, along with the Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, Minister Arifatul, and representatives from dozens of institutions, had recently conducted meetings to review the content of the Inpres. He noted that revisions should broaden its scope to cover all forms of violence, including verbal abuse.
He stressed that the purpose of expanding the Inpres is not only to synchronize the efforts of government agencies in prevention, response, and rehabilitation, but also to promote wider public participation in building a system that protects women and children.
"This requires synergistic work between government institutions at the central and regional levels," he said.
"But more than that, the involvement of all components of society, starting from families, communities, and social and religious organizations. Everyone has a crucial role in preventing violence against children and women."
Pratikno added that the Inpres should support anti-violence campaigns in schools, communities, and workplaces, while also ensuring access to legal assistance and rehabilitation for victims.
