Indonesia Transfers 1,000 Inmates to Nusakambangan Super Maximum-Security Prison

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 100 high-risk inmates from North Sumatra, all of whom were convicted drug traffickers, were transferred on Saturday, June 14, 2025, to the super maximum-security prison on Nusakambangan Island, Central Java.

The move is part of a broader effort that has seen around 1,000 inmates relocated to super maximum and maximum-security facilities during the current administration.

"In total, around 1,000 inmates have been transferred to super maximum and maximum security prisons," said Rika Aprianti, Head of the Subdirectorate of Cooperation and Public Services at the Directorate General of Corrections, in a written statement on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

Rika explained that the transfer aims to help reduce or eliminate the circulation of narcotics within correctional institutions across the country.

"On the other hand, the transferred inmates are expected to improve their behavior after being subjected to appropriate security and rehabilitation at Nusakambangan Prison," she added.

The operation was carried out by the Directorate General of Corrections with the support of 200 personnel from both the Directorate of Intelligence Security and the Directorate of Internal Compliance. The regional office of the Directorate General of Corrections in North Sumatra and the Mobile Brigade Unit also assisted in the transfer.

Rika emphasized that the relocation process adhered to established standard operating procedures. Prior to the transfer, the inmates underwent thorough assessment, investigation, and legal processing.

"This is part of the implementation of the goals of the correctional system. The main goal is for them to realize their mistakes and not repeat them, especially to the extent of negatively affecting the prison environment where they reside," she said.

Looking ahead, Rika expressed hope that the inmates, once released, will be able to reintegrate into society as better individuals, contributing not only to their families but also to the broader community.
