TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) has cautioned the government against rushing to establish diplomatic relations with Israel. Djarot cited the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution, which mandates that 'colonialism in the world must be eliminated.'
PDIP, he stated, advocates for an independent and recognized Palestine. "Let's not be too hasty in establishing diplomatic relations with Israel," Djarot Saiful Hidayat, Chairperson of the PDIP Central Executive Board (DPP), said in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
He reiterated that Palestine must first achieve independent nationhood. "We always strive for the independence of Palestine, and at this time, Palestine is still under occupation," he asserted.
Djarot emphasized that diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Israel cannot be established as long as Palestine remains occupied. "So, if we [want to] establish diplomatic relations, it will have to wait," Djarot concluded. "It's not possible, because it contradicts the Constitution."
President Prabowo Subianto previously stated that Indonesia would establish diplomatic relations with Israel if the country recognizes Palestine as an independent and sovereign state. He also mentioned that the government is prepared to guarantee Israel's security after Palestine gains independence.
This statement was made during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on May 28, 2025. "Once Palestine is recognized by Israel, Indonesia is ready to recognize Israel, and we are ready to establish diplomatic relations with Israel," Prabowo said, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
Prabowo stressed that a two-state solution is the only path to achieving Palestinian independence. "I emphasize that we must also recognize and guarantee Israel's right to exist as a sovereign state and a state whose security must be safeguarded and guaranteed," he added.
