TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sugiono, Indonesia's Foreign Minister, calls for Iran's border neighbors to facilitate the crossing of Indonesian citizens who wish to return home amidst the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also requests the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran to elevate the alert status to level 1 from the previous level 2 before declaring it through its social media channels on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
According to Sugiono, the status update is conducted amid the intensity of Israeli attacks, not only on military targets, but also civilians. He also instructs his staff to ready an emergency evacuation plan for Indonesians residing in Iran.
"We have also communicated with several neighboring countries of Iran, requesting assistance for Indonesian citizens crossing the border when evacuation takes place, as the situation becomes increasingly unfavorable," said Sugiono in his official statement from Saint Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
On-the-ground evacuation is the only way out of Iran, Sugiono said, referring to the 380 Indonesians who currently remain in the warring country.
A day earlier, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran also issued an advisory to Indonesian citizens in Iran, asking them to prepare a travel bag containing essential items such as important documents and passport scans, cash, sufficient drinks and food, clothing and personal equipment, as well as medication.
The Indonesian Embassy also urges nationals to contact the embassy hotline for further coordination and report themselves through the hotline and peduliwni.kemlu.go.id.
They are also advised to remain in constant communication with the Embassy and to periodically monitor the Embassy's social media, especially for complying with security advisories issued by the relevant authorities.
"In case of emergency, please contact the KBRI Tehran hotline at +98 902 446 8889 (Phone and WA) / +98 991 466 8845 (WA only)," wrote the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran on June 17, 2025.
Since June 13, 2025, Israel has launched massive attacks on Iran aimed at nuclear facilities in several Iranian cities and high military command centers.
Iranian media reported that as of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the death toll from Israeli airstrikes in Tehran and other areas has reached 585 people, while 1,326 others have been wounded.
In response to the Israeli attacks, the Iranian military launched ballistic missiles into Israel, resulting in 24 deaths and 500 injuries.
