Indonesia vs Iraq Head-to-Head: Poor Record Still Haunts Garuda

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The match between the Indonesian national team and Iraq will take place in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the Asia Zone Group B. The match will be held at King Abdullah Sport City Stadium, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 02:30 AM Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

Indonesia is required to win to keep their hopes alive for the 2026 World Cup. The Garuda's efforts are becoming increasingly challenging as they have not achieved positive results in their last five encounters with Iraq. Besides aiming to qualify, Indonesia also seeks its first victory against Iraq.

In the past 12 years, Indonesia and Iraq have met twice in the 2015 Asian Cup Qualifiers, once in the 2023 Asian Cup, and twice in the second round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. In the first two meetings of the 2015 Asian Cup Qualifiers in 2013, Indonesia suffered two defeats with scores of 0-1 and 0-2.

The second meeting between the two countries took place a year later. In the first match of the second round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, Indonesia suffered a heavy 1-5 loss in Basra. Indonesia's defeat by Iraq continued at the 2023 Asian Cup in January 2024 with a score of 1-3. The losses persisted in the second match of the Asian zone qualifiers. The team, known as the Mesopotamian Lions, won 2-0 against Indonesia.

Indonesia's last three defeats were experienced while Iraq was still under the guidance of Jesus Casas. Now, the Spanish coach has been replaced by former Australian coach Graham Arnold in May. Under Arnold's helm, Iraq has played four matches, resulting in three victories against Thailand (1-0), Hong Kong (2-1), and Jordan (1-0).

Iraq has only suffered one defeat under Arnold's leadership, against South Korea in their first match, with a score of 0-2.
