Inside the Maze of a Protection Case Involving the Pemuda Pancasila Boss

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Not just once, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioned Japto Soerjosoemarno, Chairperson of the National Leadership Council of Pemuda Pancasila, twice. The second questioning took place on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. At first, the purpose of the examination remained unclear.

It turned out that the KPK had altered the construction of the case over the past year. Japto was first questioned in late February 2025. At the time, he was a witness in a money laundering case that had previously implicated Rita Widyasari, former Regent of Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, as a suspect. The investigation into the case has been underway since 2017.

Investigators then changed course. They reclassified the case as an alleged gratification scheme involving payments per metric ton of coal produced in Kutai Kartanegara Regency. In this new case, the KPK named three corporate suspects. That was why Japto returned to the KPK’s Red and White Building in Kuningan, South Jakarta, to provide information regarding the roles of the three companies.

Japto, 76, arrived wearing a brown batik shirt layered with a black jacket. He did not appear to be carrying any documents. The questioning ended four hours later. He declined to disclose the substance of the examination to reporters. “Pak Japto only had dealings with one company, namely Alamjaya Barapratama,” said Japto’s lawyer, Mohamad Ali Nurdin.
