TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amid the proliferation of imported skincare products, IPB University students have introduced an innovative face mask made from an unusual ingredient, milk processing waste. Through the Student Creativity Program (PKM), they developed SunWhey, a sheet mask made with nano collagen and antioxidants that prevent wrinkles.

The team, led by Riandri Pasccal Saputra (Livestock Product Technology), along with Ahmad Andra Ramawan and Arya Wijaya (Agribusiness), Yuni Rahmah Armeliyah (Physics), and Kadisha Azka Fajriani (Chemistry), under the guidance of Professor Irma Isnafia Arief.

According to Riandri, the idea for SunWhey arose from concerns about the high-value food waste that has not been optimally utilized.

"We see a lot of side products that are actually rich in benefits, such as whey from milk processing, chicken feet rich in collagen, and coffee grounds high in antioxidants. We combine all of these ingredients to create a natural anti-aging mask," said Riandri in a written statement on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

The SunWhey product uses nata de whey, derived from the fermentation of Acetobacter xylinum bacteria, as the base material for the mask. It also contains nano collagen from broiler chicken feet, which is easily absorbed by the skin, as well as robusta coffee grounds extract, which is high in polyphenols and caffeine.

He added that this combination works to maintain skin elasticity, reduce free radicals, and prevent premature aging. "Nata de whey contains cellulose fiber from bacteria that is soft, flexible, transparent, and biodegradable. In addition to being a natural gel, the whey protein content and minerals also provide moisturizing effects and help the skin absorb collagen," said Riandri.

He claims that quality tests have shown the SunWhey mask to have high antioxidant activity, be suitable for commercial development, and be affordable at Rp30,000 for 72 grams. From a business perspective, the team sees this product as having potential because it utilizes food waste and is environmentally friendly.

More than just cosmetics, this innovation serves as a real example of how IPB University students apply science to produce economically valuable and environmentally friendly sustainable solutions.
