TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran denied on Monday that it was holding talks with the United States, stating instead that Tehran is working with Oman to establish a temporary shipping lane in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said discussions with Muscat were focused on ensuring safe vessel traffic through the strategic waterway.
"Our negotiations are with Oman to secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz," Baqaei said, as quoted by the semi-official Fars news agency.
"We are working to establish a temporary route, in cooperation with Oman, as soon as possible, so that we can ensure the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz," he said, citing Antara, as quoted from Anadolu.
Baqaei also denied reports of negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
"We are not currently negotiating with the United States," he stated.
The statement came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that talks with Iran would begin on Monday afternoon.
Trump expressed optimism that an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's denuclearization program could be reached soon.
However, Baqaei emphasized that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz would not change as long as the United States continued its aggressive actions and blockade against Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most crucial energy trade routes, serving as a vital link for shipping crude oil and natural gas from the Gulf region to international markets.
