TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) announced that energy transportation operations are continuing despite increasing global geopolitical tensions. Muhammad Baron, Corporate Secretary of PIS, said that the company is intensively monitoring tanker movements, particularly in vulnerable areas, including the Suez Canal, the Arabian Gulf, and Iran's Strait of Hormuz.
PIS currently operates dozens of tanker fleets on over 65 international routes through its subsidiary, PIS Asia Pacific. Baron confirmed that all international vessels currently operating are safe. Strict monitoring is maintained through direct coordination with local maritime authorities, ship crews, and integrated real-time monitoring systems.
However, Baron added that PIS is also preparing anticipatory measures for potential supply chain disruptions.
"The company has also mapped out secure and strategic alternative shipping routes in the event of heightened risks along main arteries like the Strait of Hormuz," Baron said in an official statement on Monday, June 23, 2025.
He stopped short of specifying the alternative routes. However, Antara quoted Pertamina's Vice President of Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, as stating that Pertamina is redirecting ship routes to safe passages through Oman and India.
Furthermore, Baron emphasized that PIS continues to actively monitor the regional and global situation. He assured that the company is taking swift steps to ensure the safety of ship crews and the smooth distribution of energy. PIS is also coordinating closely with cargo owners to anticipate the latest developments.
"Safety and continuity in energy shipping are our top priorities in maintaining national energy resilience and delivering reliable services to global clients," said Baron.
Global geopolitical escalation is mounting amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, leading Iran to consider closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's major oil and gas trade routes. The final decision to close the strait will be determined by Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
Syafruddin Karimi, an economist and lecturer at Andalas University, believes Indonesia must encourage peaceful dialogue in the Iran-Israel conflict to prevent the closure of the Hormuz Strait. He warned that the strait's closure poses a risk to the stability of the national economy.
He also suggested that Indonesia could recommend peaceful dialogue through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the leaders of the Developing 8 (D-8) group.
"In this critical situation, Indonesia must not just be a bystander," he said in an official statement on Monday, June 23, 2025.
According to him, Indonesia has an interest in promoting peaceful dialogue because if this crucial route is disrupted, global oil prices could drastically spike to US$130 per barrel. This risk could trigger global inflation and narrow the fiscal space of developing countries, including Indonesia.
"We are at risk of facing rupiah depreciation, pressure on foreign exchange reserves, and increasing energy subsidies and food prices," Syafruddin explained.
