TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hamas and Israel's delegations on Monday, October 6, 2025, participated in indirect negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The talks were mediated by Egypt and Qatar to follow up on US President Donald Trump's proposal aimed at ending the war in Gaza.

As reported by Egypt state intelligence-linked Al-Qahera News, the delegations discussed the on-ground conditions preparation for the release of prisoners and captives in accordance with the US-proposed plan. The news agency also mentioned that the mediators from Egypt and Qatar were working with both parties to establish a mechanism for exchanging prisoners.

According to a report by CNA, the negotiations took place behind closed doors with tight security, and negotiators spoke through mediators between the two sides. This meeting took place just a few weeks after Israel attempted to kill the head of the Hamas negotiating team in an attack in Qatar.

Two Years After the October 7 Attack

A Palestinian official close to the negotiation process told Al Jazeera that the first session of talks ended on late Monday and was scheduled to continue on Tuesday, October 7. These negotiations took place on the second anniversary of Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which prompted an escalation of Israel's genocidal war on Gaza.

A Palestinian source close to the Hamas leadership said, "We expect the negotiations to be difficult and complex, given the occupation's intentions to continue its war of extermination."

Rising Casualties Amid Calls for Ceasefire

Despite the ongoing negotiations, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza continue. According to Al Jazeera, at least ten Palestinians were killed on Monday, October 6, including three aid seekers. The death toll since last Friday has reached 104 people, although President Trump has urged Israel to stop bombing so that the negotiations can proceed.

Trump previously expressed confidence that both parties had agreed to the peace framework he proposed. "I think Hamas has been agreeing to things that are very important ... I think we're going to have a deal," Trump told reporters at the White House.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote that there had been very positive discussions with Hamas and other government officials over the weekend to free hostages, end the war in Gaza, and achieve peace in the Middle East." He added, "I am asking everyone to move fast … time is of the essence, or massive bloodshed will follow."

So far, Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed at least 67,160 people, injured another 169,679, and left two million residents in the region at risk of starvation.
