Israel Warns of Imminent Iranian Nuclear Threat, U.S. Disagrees

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  The United States and Israel hold differing views on how close Iran is to acquiring nuclear weapons. According to Anadolu on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, U.S. intelligence assessments suggest that Tehran would need several more years to develop a nuclear bomb. In contrast, Tel Aviv maintains that the threat is already imminent.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims Iran is rapidly advancing its nuclear weapons program, which has led to a wave of Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear and military sites, CNN reported.

However, four sources familiar with the matter told CNN that U.S. intelligence does not believe Iran is actively building a nuclear bomb at this time. Washington estimates it would take Iran at least two to three years to produce and deploy one.

Recent strikes have damaged nuclear facilities such as Natanz, but the heavily fortified enrichment site of Fordow remains intact.

The differing assessments have created a dilemma for the Trump administration, which is seeking to avoid escalation while preparing for potential retaliation.

Regional tensions escalated since Friday when Israel launched air strikes on several locations in Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch a counterattack.

Israeli authorities said at least 24 people have been killed and hundreds more injured in Iran's missile strikes since then.

Iran stated that at least 224 people were killed and over 1,000 others injured in the Israeli strikes.
