Jakarta Car Free Day Ends Early Due to Mount Anak Krakatau Ash

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Transportation Agency moved up the end time of the Motor Vehicle-Free Day (HBKB)—more commonly known as the Car Free Day (CFD)—in Jakarta on Sunday morning, September 6, 2026. The event, originally scheduled to conclude at 10:00 WIB, was halted at 09:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Budi Awaluddin stated that this measure was taken to anticipate potential health risks to the public posed by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. He emphasized that public safety and health were the priorities behind this decision.

"Once the Amarta Run and ASN Run activities concluded at 09:00 WIB, we immediately ended the entire HBKB program. This step is a preventive measure to protect the public from potential exposure to volcanic ash," Budi said in a statement on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

In addition to shortening the Car Free Day event, DKI Transportation Agency officers in the field distributed masks to the public and urged residents to return home immediately and refrain from further outdoor activities. "We urge residents to return home right away. We encourage the public to minimize outdoor activities," Budi said.

Budi advised the public to remain calm, wear masks if outdoor activity is unavoidable, and stay updated with official information regarding the status of the volcanic ash and air quality.

Volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau has been affecting Java since yesterday. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was temporarily closed due to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, starting in the early hours of Sunday, September 6, 2026. The Ministry of Transportation's Director General of Civil Aviation, Lukman F. Laisa, stated that the closure followed the results of a paper test conducted between 00:35 and 01:05 WIB on Sunday. The test returned positive results indicating the presence of volcanic ash at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. “The Directorate General of Civil Aviation at the Ministry of Transportation continues to conduct intensive monitoring and coordination with flight operators, airport managers, air navigation services, and the BMKG regarding the impact of Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruptive activity on flight operations, particularly at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK),” said Lukman in his official statement on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Previously, residents in Lampung, Banten, and West Java felt tremors and heard rumbling sounds from Friday night through Saturday morning, September 4–5, 2026. The Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Siti Sumilah Rita Susilawati, stated that the booming sounds and rumbling originated from an eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau that occurred on Friday night, September 4, 2026, at 22:17 WIB.

Rita noted that the current eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau has not yet posed a danger requiring a change in the volcano's activity status. Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Alert/Siaga), and the danger zone is maintained at a radius of 3 kilometers from the volcano's center of activity. “Therefore, please heed the 3-kilometer radius, as there is a genuine danger posed by the ejection of incandescent lava,” said Siti during an online press conference held on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
