The number of Palestinian journalists killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has reached 240 since October 2023, according to the Palestinian Authority in the enclave on Saturday.
The most recent victim was Khaled Mohammed Al-Madhoun, a cameraman for Palestine TV.
Al Jazeera reported on August 11 the deaths of four of its staff members, including reporter Anas Al-Sharif, after an Israeli strike hit a journalists' tent near a hospital in Gaza City.
The Israeli military (IDF) acknowledged the attack, claiming Al-Sharif was affiliated with the Palestinian resistance group Hamas. Al Jazeera later updated its report, confirming five of its staff were killed in the attack.
Tahsin al-Astal, deputy chair of the Palestinian Journalists Union, told RIA Novosti that the death toll for journalists had since risen to six, according to an Antara report on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
With 240 journalists killed, the conflict in Gaza has become the deadliest in history for members of the press, surpassing previous records from World War I and II (a combined 68), the Vietnam War (63), and the Afghanistan War (127).
The Indonesian People's Alliance to Defend Palestine (ARI-BP) stated that the high number of journalist deaths reflects Israel's continued efforts to silence the truth.
"This shows that they are not only killing people but also wanting to kill and silence the truth. They don't want any voices to be heard, except their own," said Zaitun Rasmin, Chairperson of the ARI-BP Executive Committee, at a discussion in Jakarta on August 14. She described the killings as "extremely cruel."
The Israeli genocide in Gaza, interrupted only by brief ceasefires, has resulted in the deaths of more than 62,300 Palestinians and approximately 1,500 Israelis. The conflict has also extended to Lebanon and Yemen, and has even triggered an exchange of missile attacks between Israel and Iran.
