Liverpool Breaks Transfer Record to Sign Germany's Florian Wirtz

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Liverpool has broken their transfer record to sign German international player Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The British club announced Wirtz's official joining on Friday, June 20, 2025.

ESPN previously reported that the deal was worth a total of £116 million (around Rp2.6 trillion). The amount includes an initial payment of £100 million with £16 million add-ons.

The transfer fee for Wirtz to Liverpool is larger than that of Enzo Fernandez when he was brought from Benfica to Chelsea for £103 million in January 2023, and Jack Grealish from Aston Villa to Manchester City for £100 million in August 2021.

A source told ESPN that the 22-year-old attacking midfielder has signed a five-year contract with the English Premier League champions. His squad number is expected to be announced later in the summer.

Wirtz is excited to face a new challenge with Liverpool."I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me," he said as quoted from a statement shared by the club, referred to by ESPN. "This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.

Born in Pulheim, he began his career by joining the Brauweiler academy, then moved to the FC Koln academy in July 2010 at the age of 7. Eight years later, he became part of the FC Koln U-17 team. Two years later, he moved to the Leverkusen U-19 team on January 31, 2020. Just half a year later, he was promoted to the Bayer Leverkusen first team on July 1, 2020, and then moved to Liverpool in the summer of 2025.

He hopes to do his best with The Reds. "I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best," he said.

Wirtz admitted to having spoken with several players who play for Liverpool. He is eager to make his debut with the squad under the guidance of Arne Slot. "They told me that it's perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game."

Liverpool won the transfer race against Bayern Munich and Manchester City, who were also reportedly interested in recruiting Wirtz. He ranks second in the list of 100 attacking midfielders, according to ESPN.

Wirtz, having scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen, becomes Liverpool's second recruit this summer. Previously, his former teammate at Leverkusen, Jeremie Frimpong, joined first.

Initially, he was expected to continue playing in the Bundesliga for the next season, either staying at Leverkusen or joining Bayern Munich. However, the 22-year-old opted to join Liverpool. "I would like to win everything every year," he said, referring to his ambition in moving to Anfield.
