
TEMPO.CO, Bandung - A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck southern West Java at 3:24 PM local time on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the epicenter was located offshore, 140 kilometers southwest of Garut.
Hartanto, Head of BMKG Regional Office II in South Tangerang, said the quake occurred at a shallow depth of 13 kilometers with coordinates at 8.32°S and 107.27°E. “The earthquake was caused by deformation activity in the Indo-Australian intraplate zone,” he stated in a written release.
BMKG’s shakemap indicated the tremor was felt at a III MMI intensity in Garut, Pangandaran, Ciamis, Taraju, Sindangbarang, and Tasikmalaya, strong enough to be noticeable indoors, similar to the sensation of a passing truck.
In Soreang and Lembang, the tremor was measured at II MMI, felt by some people and causing light swaying of hanging objects. Banjar City reported shaking at a II–III MMI scale.
Hartanto confirmed there were no reports of structural damage and no aftershocks had been recorded as of 03:45 PM local time.
"The public should remain calm and not be influenced by unverified rumors," he added.
