TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo visited the location of the collapse of Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School (pesantren) in Buduran, Sidoarjo, on Monday, October 6, 2025. Dody mentioned that only 50 pesantrens have permits to establish buildings (IMB). However, according to data from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the number of Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia has reached more than 42,000.
Therefore, he will soon conduct an evaluation. "Throughout Indonesia, only 50 Islamic boarding schools have permits to establish buildings. That's why we are gradually resolving the issue of the quality of each building," he said.
According to Dody, the evaluation will be conducted together with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the local government. However, Dody stated that his visit was not to discuss building construction, but to ensure that emergency handling is optimal.
"After the search and rescue team's task is completed, then we will begin the inspection and construction repairs," Dody said.
Regarding the cause of the building collapse, Dody was reluctant to provide further information. He emphasized that a thorough investigation can only be carried out after all the victims have been successfully evacuated.
"I cannot speak about construction failures yet. Everything will be evaluated after the rescue is completed," he said.
When asked about underage students being involved in the construction process, Dody stated that he did not want to jump to conclusions. "Don't say that. This is from students for students. So, it cannot be simply stated that underage children are involved," he said.
Dody also emphasized that the government is currently focused on rescue efforts. Therefore, he did not want to comment further.
