TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, West Nusa Tenggara, erupted once again at 11:05 AM local time on Monday, July 7, 2025. The head of the Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, stated that the explosive eruption produced a 1.8-kilometer-high ash column from its summit.
"The eruption was accompanied by a loud explosion and a hot cloud that slid up to 5 kilometers north and northeast," he said in an official statement shortly after the event.
The volcano last erupted two weeks ago. Visual observations on July 6-7, 2025, showed smoke rising from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki's main crater to heights of 50-200 meters above the summit. Lava piles filling the crater area were also visible through a drone.
Until 12:00 PM local time, there were records of 1 eruption earthquake, 3 eruptions, 10 non-harmonic tremors, 2 low-frequency (LF) events, 7 shallow volcanic earthquakes, continuous tremors with a dominant amplitude of 2.9 millimeters, and 9 distant tectonic earthquakes.
"The level of activity of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is very high due to the explosive eruption and continuous tremors," Wafid said. Other volcanic seismic events also suggest that magma is still being supplied and that fluids are moving toward the surface.
Tiltmeter deformation data also showed slow inflation over the past week, indicating pressure accumulation due to magma supply. On the other hand, GPS data indicated a deflation pattern. "It shows the pressure from within is starting to decrease, but the pressure accumulation at shallow depths remains high," he said.
The Geological Agency is still maintaining Level IV or Alert status for Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki. Residents and tourists are advised not to approach areas within a 6-kilometer radius and the Southwest-Northeast sector within 7 kilometers from the eruption center. There are also warnings about the potential for lava floods in the event of heavy rain, especially in river basins originating from the summit of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, such as Dulipali, Nobo, Hokeng Jaya, and Nurabelen.
"Residents affected by ashfall are advised to use masks or cover their nose and mouth to protect their respiratory system," Wafid added.
