TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian House of Commission I member Frederik Kalalembang has criticized rampant online gambling due to the lax supervision of SIM card registration. He raised this issue during a Working Meeting between the House of Commission I and the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Frederik asked Komdigi to tighten the regulations on registering SIM cards to prevent online gambling. He stated, "Currently, the issue of SIM cards is still unclear, and it is the source of online gambling problems, fraud, and the initiation of pornographic sites."
Frederik urged Komdigi to pay close attention to the supervision of SIM cards. Additionally, he also intended to invite mobile operators to participate in addressing this issue to prevent an increase in online gambling players in the country.
Komdigi Minister Meutya Viada Hafid responded to Frederik's statement. She claimed to have reinforced the regulations for SIM card registration by limiting one family identification number to a maximum of three numbers per mobile operator.
However, Meutya Hafid admitted that this policy only addresses regulations, and there are currently no sanctions for having more than three numbers per operator on a SIM card. "There is already a ministerial regulation that stipulates only three numbers per mobile operator. But it does not regulate sanctions yet," Meutya said during the meeting.
At the same time, Meutya also promised to discuss this issue with the work units at the Ministry of Communication and Digital to find a middle ground, such as regulating the issue of sanctions through ministerial regulations.
