Mount Marapi in West Sumatra Erupts, Emitting Thick Gray Ash Column

5 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Padang - The Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted once again on Sunday night, May 4, 2025, according to the records of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). The eruption occurred at 22:09 WIB.

The volcanic ash was observed towering to a height of about 1,000 meters from the summit of the mountain or 3,891 meters above sea level. The ash column, which is a dark gray color, was seen tilting towards the east.

"The eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters and a duration of about 45 seconds," said Marapi Volcano Monitoring Post official Terus Purnomo in his written statement on Sunday.

He continued, stating that the current status of Mount Marapi is at Level II (Alert). PVMBG has recommended that the community and tourists should not enter an area within a radius of 3 kilometers from the activity center at Verbeek Crater.

He also urged residents living in the valleys or river flows originating from the peak of Marapi to be cautious of the potential for lahars, especially during the rainy season. "If ash rain occurs, the public is advised to use a nose and mouth mask to avoid respiratory tract disturbances," he added.

Meanwhile, the Bukittinggi City Government, Padang Panjang City, Tanah Datar Regency, and Agam Regency were asked to coordinate with PVMBG or the Marapi Volcano Observation Post in Bukittinggi to obtain the latest information regarding the volcanic activities.

Not only that, he also called on all parties to maintain calmness and not spread unverified information about the Mount Marapi activities.

Meanwhile, the CCTV from Golden Net ISP located in Biaro, Agam Regency, successfully captured the eruption of Marapi on Sunday, emitting a stream of fire. The 1-minute video was sent by one of the residents in the Marapi Information group.
